Information Pack

The soap box race down Ann Street has become a much anticipated Gala event. The safety of both spectators and participants has always been crucial but even more so now as the numbers of both continue to grow.

This year the following stringent controls will be applied.

ENTRY FORM must be printed out and completed by each entrant and countersigned by a
parent /guardian for under 16 year olds.(attached)

BUILD STANDARDS are detailed on attached sheet and must be adhered to. Mainly these are safety related, but also outline a standard build.

PERSONAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT as listed on attached page must be worn by ALL participants.

SCRUTINEERING will start one hour before race time in the Health Centre car park to check all above safety standards are met. Running numbers will be issued to those soapboxes passing the inspection.

No Form, No Go

Gala Soapbox Build Standards

Soapbox must be constructed with wood, chipboard or plastic
Metal construction not permitted
Only the metal in wheels, axles, nuts, bolts, nails and screws permitted
Be no longer than 2 metres and no wider than 1 metre
Have a minimum of 6 inches (15cm) ground clearance.
Have 4 wheels
Be capable of being steered
Be strong/secure enough to make at least 2 runs of the course
All sharp edges showing to the front and rear of the soapbox must be covered with a layer of foam padding held with duct tape. Any material used to make the frame MUST be covered with wood, NO sharp edges or you won't be allowed to run.


Scrutineers, nomimated by the organisers, will examine and check all the soapbox carts against the stated criteria in the Health Centre car park from 1.15pm on race day.


Failure to comply will result in refusal to race.







Personal Protective Safety Equipment

 It is vital all drivers, adult or not, wear appropriate safety equipment as specified below during their run.

Head protection in the form of a full face crash helmet or Hurley type head/ face protection.
Elbow pads
Gloves
Knee pads

Adults are charged with showing good safe example to those who are younger.
